How to Choose Employees As Business Workplace Mentors - Workology

How to Choose Employees As Business Workplace Mentors - Workology How to Choose Employees As Business Workplace Mentors Mentors play an instrumental role in the personal and professional development of employees at all levels within the company.   The most effective place for a mentor is within the onboarding of new employees.   The mentee is able to advance at an accelerated rate by-passing roadblocks that might have occurred in the first months on the job. How to Choose Employees As Business Workplace Mentors Are you a leader preparing the companies 2014 areas of focus for ensuring a successful business year?   I highly recommend rolling out a mentorship program and selecting a passionate program manager to lead the program.   A mentorship program motivates current employees and builds confidence in employees entering the organization.   In order to find the best employees for the mentor program, you need to focus on the top 5 characteristics found within the most successful mentors. #1 Commitment  There are some employees that talk the talk and others that walk the walk.   The best mentors are the ones that talk the talk and walk the walk.   They will make statements that XYZ will need to be handled before completing project 245.   And, they will have the ball rolling within the hour working across departments to make it happen.   They know everything about the organization and are familiar with everyone working for the company.   Their lives rotate around making themselves and the company successful.   Ask them to be a mentor!   As Ace Ventura say’s in Pet Detective, “Fits Like A Glove!”  #2 Camaraderie  The most important characteristic to find in a mentor is the ability to connect with the mentee.   This really takes a highly skilled individual within the company that understands personality assessment.   Someone who is able to connect the right mentor with the right mentee.   Such individuals can be found in the human resource or recruiting departments.   Ask around the company, as they are typically known well by others.  #3 Discretion  The individual within the organization that can be trusted with the most confidential information has the ability to offer a place of trust for the mentee to share personal information in order to help them develop the skills wanted and required.   This employee can be found listening to others with great intent with a fountain of wisdom to share when needed.   “There was great difference between persons and, discretion did not always accompany years nor was youth always without it”  It is best to not focus on age when seeking the employee that possesses discretion. #4 Integrity  In order for the mentee to trust their mentor and soar like an eagle, they must be able to respect their mentor during the mentorship.   The best example of a mentor with high integrity was in the movie The Karate Kid.   The meaning expressed through the words of Mr. Miyagi, “Wax On, Wax Off” taught the young Daniel Son to appreciate every step within each lesson as building blocks for achieving the overall goals.   Seek the employee that all others respect and ye shall find the mentor. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} #5 Mindfulness This employee will stand out from all others because their personality is infectious causing everyone around them to feel a sense of happiness and self-worth.   Seek out the employee who is being kind to others and those that live by the karma codes. “People accept only that person as their leader who is radiant with good knowledge and karma.” I hope you are able to include a mentor program in your top strategic goals for 2014.   All employees are in need of direction from their leaders and find inspiration and motivation through a selected mentor. How effective have mentor relationships been in your career development?   “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;}

Working for a Family Owned Business - Pros and Cons - Career Pivot

Working for a Family Owned Business - Pros and Cons - Career Pivot Family Owned Business Have you thought about going to work for a family possessed business? These organizations have their own unique characteristics. What provoked me to expound on this was an email I gotten after I posted my LinkedIn Publisher post, Are You a Perfect Fit for the Job? At that point You Will Not Get It! The creator of the email said she had been an ideal fit for her last occupation, however needed to stop following one year. She composed that her antecedent kept going just seven months. The activity was insane! The manager was insane! My reaction was, I wagered it was a family possessed business! She stated, Amazing. Truly. The proprietor, her significant other, and child worked there. From my experience, there are upsides and downsides with regards to working for a family claimed business. Geniuses Family possessed organizations will in general be littler. In the event that you are a generalist (as opposed to being an authority), this is something worth being thankful for. You will probably get the chance to wear more capsâ€"getting a more noteworthy assortment of assignments. A family possessed business can feel like a family for the entire staff. I have known numerous proprietors who treat their workers like they are a piece of the family. For the opportune individual, this can be very ameliorating and make an intriguing domain. Cons A family claimed business is actually thatâ€"family possessed. Did you experience childhood in a broken family as I did? In the event that the family is useless, at that point it is almost certain the family possessed business will be broken. I have worked for a non-benefit that was useless, and can't envision working in a useless family claimed business. Tune in to the latest scene Would you like to climb? All things considered, on the off chance that you are not family, the probability of taking an initiative position is little. All around run family possessed organizations additionally will in general have low turnoverwhich can make climbing inside the association troublesome. Is the business developing? Truly? Will the business develop past the capacities of the proprietors to oversee it, and would they say they will get outside ability? In the event that you are in your 50s, you will recall a book named the Peter Principle. The reason of the book is we all will unavoidably ascend to their degree of ineptitude. I have seen this with various customers who work for a family possessed business. The business develops and develops, however the supervisory crew ascends to their degree of ineptitude. The family can't see that they have to get ability from outside of the family. Relatives After the Business Fails I have worked with numerous customers who were a piece of a family that maintained a family possessed business. They were left jobless when the business fizzled during the extraordinary downturn. A significant number of them think that its hard to secure positions with customary managers since they essentially don't fit into a corporate job. Have you worked for family claimed business? What was your experience? It is safe to say that you are a solid match for a family possessed business? This post is a piece of a week by week arrangement on the Personal Branding Blog. Be that as it may, for those living in the present time and place, the time has come to give thanks and give! One of my preferred analogies for dealing with yourself originates from the deck of the plane. All of you hear what Im saying. The airline steward addresses you in a quick paced, frequently monotone voice. After the safety belt showing (truly, who doesnt know how one of those clasps work) theres the admonition that ought to there be lost internal compression, a veil will drop out from boards above. Pull delicately on the cover and spot it over your nose and mouth with the goal that you can all the more likely help those going around you! Picture by basictheory Deal with You You need oxygen so as to might suspect and help other people. What this implies for you is that you have to have a decent working mind and mental prosperity so as to help other people. At the point when you are feeling hopeless, you cannot climb out of a paper pack. So begin dealing with your psychological well-being today. Be Happy Then Succeed is the key to dealing with you. Set up It As a written record Much thanks to you goes far and perhaps the most straightforward approaches to separate yourself is sending a composed message! Be certifiable and genuine. Cause it to associate on an individual level. Consider the individuals you realize who have had any kind of effect in your life (over a wide span of time). Wouldnt it be ideal to tell them the amount you welcome them? Require significant investment this week to send your messages! Give Grace to Others This life isnt about you. The individuals who have the most extravagant lives are giving magnanimously and liberally to other people. Who would you be able to help? Who needs to know what you know? Why would you be able to matter? Truly, regardless of whether you are in pursuit of employment or imbued profoundly in your activity, give back. What You Must Do To Conquer The Pay Gap

What You Must Do To Conquer The Pay Gap What might occur if everybody at work appeared at your office tomorrow with their compensation in plain view, wearinga unofficial ID that uncovered: Hi! My pay is Would you glance around and think, Yeah, that appears to be reasonable. ...? Or on the other hand would you be bound to think, WTF?! Thatguyis making more than me?! With such a great amount in the report about compensation imbalance, you should ponder. David Burkus puts forth the defense for pay straightforwardness in his TED Talk Why you should know how much your colleagues get paid. His examination underpins the possibility that the present act of mystery prompts data asymmetry, where one gathering knows more than the other and utilizations that to further their potential benefit. Your manager recognizes what you make and can give you a standard typical cost for basic items increment. Furthermore, you thankfully acknowledge it. Yet, did you realize that the person sitting close to you, the person who began working in a similar activity and on a similar day as you...well, he previously requested more compensation when he was employed. What's more, he requested to be put on the advisory group that you were trusting that your manager will welcome you to join. What's more, hes previously set up a mid-year execution survey to get his first raise. He inquired. What's more, your manager has no motivation to impart that data to you. Its not to his/her preferred position to share. Here are two things you can do about it. The issue were attempting to illuminate is that pay mystery makes it simple to let a pay hole augment. Theres a 23percent contrast, or a 77 pennies on the dollar disparity among people. Burkus says that in the national government, a working environment that distributes pay extends, the hole therapists to 11percent. 1) Ask for additional. One thing that adds to the disparity is that that men ask and ladies dont. Men are multiple times bound to request what they need. Men are lauded for asking and ladies are punished. Ladies are 30 percent bound to be called bossy or forceful when we inquire. Dont interpret this measurement as meaning that you shouldnt ask on the grounds that you hazard being called bossy or forceful. You realize the hazard is there, approve of it. Ask cordially, with information from the market, compensation number crunchers, and your presentation about what youre worth. 2) Dont uncover your pay history. In certain states and urban communities, it's really illicit for businesses to get some information about their past pay. In case you're ever promted to address this inquiry question, you can react considerately by saying something like,Help me see how my past compensation is associated with this activity. In the event that you think Im a solid match, that I have the capabilities to carry out the responsibility well, Id like you to make me an offer dependent on that. At that point hush up. Dont give some other reasons. Rehash that line, on the off chance that you have to. How this functions Lets state youre making $50k and you discovered that your friend in a similar activity is making $65k. You begin scanning for a new position since you, as well, ought to make $65k. What occurs if the employing director, talent scout or enrollment specialist asks you the feared, What was your past compensation? question and you concede that you were making $50k? Futureproofing Your Marketing Career

Futureproofing Your Marketing Career Futureproofing Your Marketing Career 3 May 2018 Claire Anderson Our resident marketing guru (also know as our Associate Marketing Director) Ewan Anderson recently visited Robert Gordon University to discuss the future of marketing with some post graduate students, in conjunction with the Chartered Institute of Marketing. In advance of his talk we had a long discussion about the current state of the market, what skills employers are looking for, and what continued education should look like for this generation of marketeers. Perhaps the most convoluted area of discussion, and one that we are frequently asked about by our candidates, is specialisation. Are you better to pick particular area of marketing and becoming very, very good at it? Or are employers more keen to have candidates with a wide range of skills? Most importantly - what offers the best chances of future employment? As in every discussion in recruitment, our final conclusions were quite nuanced. Below is a general guide to what we think are the right choices to make and how to future proof your career as you progress. STEP ONE Where are you now? Figuring out exactly where you are with your career, and therefore where to go next, is something the most difficult part of planning your future. Introspection and self-analysis is tough, but they’re important skills to develop. Some questions to consider are: -             What do I do now on a day to day basis? -             What have I added to my skillset from the last time I moved job? -             What soft skills have I improved on? -             What do my colleagues think are my strongest suits? -             What would my colleagues think are my weaknesses? By answering these questions you will start to develop a fairly clear of whether you have become a generalist guru, or have developed a laser focus in one area. STEP TWO Where do you want to go next? Figuring out where you want to be in the long term can help you decide what your next role should look like. This is where specialisation becomes an issue you need to address. If you want to be a Head of SEO or PPC, or Head of Insight, then it makes sense to really narrow down and become an expert in those particular subject matters. However, if you want to look at being the next Marketing Director of a big FTSE 100 company, or if you want to eventually run your own business, then you need to develop a broad base of skills.   This can vary slightly if you see yourself in a role such as Head of Digital - in which case you still need to be more generalist, but across the entire digital marketing spectrum . Once you have decided this, step back and look at Step One. Identify the gaps in what you want to do versus what you can already do and then move onto Step Three. STEP THREE What do I need to learn? Successful people tend to all have one thing in common - continually pursuing professional development. No great leader or innovator in any field has ever assumed that they know everything - strength lie in knowing your weaknesses and focusing your learning on the areas you need to improve. Look at the gaps in your knowledge you identified in Steps One and Two, and then develop a plan to improve those areas. This process can often involve questioning whether or not your current employer can offer you opportunities to improve these skills, or if you should consider a new role if you want to move forward. STEP FOUR Do it over and over again This may seem laborious, and to an extent it is, but it is an essential part of ensuring that your career is futureproofed. Resting on your laurels can lead to five years slipping past while you stay on the same salary doing the same role, falling behind your peers and without the breadth of skills opportunities you require to be on a parr with them. At its very core, the question of whether or not to specialise comes down to what you enjoy doing, what the demand in your industry is, and what your talents best lend themselves to. Whatever route you take, success follows those who constantly push themselves upwards and out of their comfort zones and who never stop learning. Eden Scott is always happy to provide career advice, to help you figure out what your next move should be, and to advise on what skills are required and in demand in the marketplace. Congratulations to Nick Corcodilos Ask the HeadHunter!

Congratulations to Nick Corcodilos Ask the HeadHunter! I met Nick Corcodilos when he was speaking to a group of resume writers in Savannah, at a conference. His message was so blunt that some offended writers walked out and paced the hallway, fuming.  I went out to see what the chatter was, and how this dude could have offended these people so much. Not too long after, we were on a phone call, and over the years our relationship was strengthened.  Heres what I love about Nick: he tells it like it is. One of my chief complaints as a job seeker was that I couldnt get honest feedback from anyone. Information was sanitized and simplified.  I wasnt getting the results I needed. How do you make progress when you dont get the right information from anyone? Nick was the guy who didnt hold back, didnt give you sanitized information if you wanted an answer, he gave the answer.  Some people cant handle that.  But most job seekers need that.  Thats why I have loved Nicks writings, blog posts, newsletter, columns, etc. And you should too. Five Ways To Build a Powerful Brand and Become a Master Marketer -

Five Ways To Build a Powerful Brand and Become a Master Marketer - Many people believe that building a brand is as simple as drawing up a logo and choosing a visually pleasing colour scheme. While this is certainly a part of the equation, a brand is so much more: it’s a representation of your company’s values and a way to draw in and retain the right customers for your business. Every successful company today has built a recognisable brand that influences their buyer’s behaviour by driving loyalty and recognition. While establishing a powerful brand is no easy feat, it’s completely achievable with time, commitment, and know-how. Here are some tips to get you on your way: Work with Professionals If you don’t have a clue about where to begin when it comes to building your brand, don’t be afraid to seek the help of a professional.   You can find a  branding agency in Melbourne, Austrailia, Los Angeles, California, or whichever city is convenient   Branding agencies can help you find the best way to accurately convey your business’ identity to your target market by workshopping everything from logo design to tone of voice. Know Your Market Once you’ve established your identity and voice, it’s time to identify your buyer personas. These are semi-fictional representations of your ideal customers that are based on market research and your existing knowledge of buyer behaviour. Buyer personas are a very useful tool that can help you gain an understanding of your customers’ wants and needs and allow you to tailor a customer journey around them to drive sales. Use Social Media Social media is one of the most powerful tools available for businesses wanting to strengthen their brand. Once you commence your marketing efforts across social media, email, your blog â€" or anywhere else, for that matter â€" it’s vital to use the same brand imagery and tone of voice. This ensures that your customers get to know your brand and associate your business with the personality you’re projecting. Likewise, Ensure that you’re consistently active across all platforms to drive your engagement and follower rates. TED Talks Resume Writing

TED Talks Resume WritingIn this article we will take a look at Ted Talks resume writing. With most resumes today, they tend to be so generic that they hardly stand out from the rest of the crowd. This means that you will probably only have a few chances to make a good impression on potential employers when they see your resume, and your resume should give them some idea of what to expect from you as an employee. Ted Talks resumes writing is a great way to impress potential employers with your passion for a particular topic and give them a few reasons to hire you for the job.You might not know about it, but TED talks have been around for many years now. They are one of the most popular things on the internet today, and have even been adapted into videos. This means that there are millions of people who are interested in learning more about topics ranging from topics such as time management, to topics such as green energy. With a TED Talk in hand, these people are eager to learn more, and will want to watch your video on that topic.What can you do to help yourself by including a TED talk in your resume? You should always include a resume in your application, but it is not essential. The TED videos will be different though, because they tend to be something different. These are usually considered one of the best ways to promote yourself, so when they are included in your resume they will be much more effective.In addition to providing information about the video, you should also include a link to the TED website, as well as a short bio. People want to know more about you, and who you are. By including this bit of information, it gives you a chance to provide an honest answer to the questions that are posed in the TED talk. You will not want to use the TED talks in place of your own resume. You may consider including these in your cover letter, but this is not a good idea.The TED talks are generally a product of a passion that someone has for a specific topic. So w hen you include these in your resume, you will be able to provide great value to potential employers, and give them a reason to hire you. It is possible to make a TED talk an advantage, rather than a disadvantage.Why not consider the TED videos when it comes to Ted Talks resume writing? They will be very similar to other resumes, in that they will not include any info about your current job. This is an extremely important aspect of a resume and can make or break a resume. You will want to show that you are an employee, not someone who has taken a class, or someone who has taken a night school course on a certain subject.The key to making a TED Video a great tool for resume writing is to put the video in your resume as part of your overall business experience. You can include a paragraph in your resume about why you are an employee, or you can include a detailed paragraph about how you personally created the TED Video, and how you came up with the idea for the TED Talk. This informat ion should be included in a separate paragraph as well, but it should make it clear that you are using your skills to help other people, and you should be noted as an entrepreneur.In conclusion, TED talks are great resume writing tools. When you include a video of yourself on this topic, you will have a great chance of creating a useful resume. If you plan on using your TED talk to help land the job, you will want to make sure that the paragraph includes your work history and business experience as well, which will help to show that you have a lot of leadership potential.

Job satisfaction and the bottom line - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Job satisfaction and the bottom line - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Gallup have a report from a study involving 200.000 emplyees from 36 different companies, that clearly links high job satisfaction with good financial results. Among other things the report shows that satisfied employees result in: * Much lower employee turnover rates * Higher customer loyalty * Higher sales * Higher profit margins This is great news for my Project Happiness at Work. And I would love to add something to this study. To me job satisfaction seems like a very limited ambition. I would personally never settle for being satisfied with my job. I do my best work and feel much better when Im deeply engaged, professionally challenged and experience constant personal development at work. So what would be the economic impact of a happy workforce, as opposed to one that is merely satisfied. I suspect the the gains could be enormous, but Ill be the first to admit that I have no hard data to support this personal belief. Do you know of any studies in this area? Drop me a comment. Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. And if you want more great tips and ideas you should check out our newsletter about happiness at work. It's great and it's free :-)Share this:LinkedInFacebookTwitterRedditPinterest Related

3 Secrets to Strengthen Your Executive Resume

3 Secrets to Strengthen Your Executive Resume No matter how strong you think your resume is, there’s always room for improvement. Even the top rated resume writing services will write, proof and edit any given resume multiple times before it gets into the final form. Sometimes it only takes some minor tweaks, but other times a complete overhaul is necessary. In order to make your resume stand out, here are some secrets to strengthen it. Utilize Keywords Properly Potential employers look for keywords at the top of every resume. When you’re writing a professional resume, it’s important to use unique keywords that stand out, rather than using general ones used by every other applicant. Instead of saying you are a “team player,” write about a specific project in which you were a team leader and had to collaborate with others in your organization. This is Who is Most Likely to Sabotage You in the Office, According to a Survey

This is Who is Most Likely to sabotierung You in the Office, According to a Survey At the office, chitchat behind co-workers backs is pretty common, but a new study found that managers and men were the most duplicitous at work.A survey conducted by Propeller Research with management platform Reflektive surveyed 1,000 full-time employees and found that managers were more than twice as likely to sabotage another manager in order to make themselves appear better.Managers, in general, were more commonly using sabotaging tactics than actual employers, according to the survey.Those in power were found more likely to talk about another behind their back (managers at 26% versus employees at 14%). Managers were found to withhold certain information more often than employees (18% versus 7%) and they held pre-meetings to steal colleagues ideas (16% versus 5%).Battle of the sexesWhen it comes to getting ahead, men were far more likely to sabotage a colleague leading up to a performance review compared to women, according to the survey. In fact, men were four times more likely (men at 8% versus women at 2%) to do so. positiv 11%of men said theyve suggested their own mistakes were actually someone elses fault, compared to only 4% of women.One way to solve smack talk in the office might be 360 reviews, according to the survey. 360 reviews are where peers submit anonymous feedback on anything in the office. It creates an outlet to direct animosity and other misgivings and for those most guilty of sabotage men and managers , they both agreed that 360 reviews were beneficial.Men appreciated feedback more than women from 360 reviews, while men also found it brought them closer to everyone (26% versus 15%) and nearly a quarter of male respondents said they felt it was the only way to improve, compared to 11% of women.The degree and frequency of deliberate sabotage at work is concerning but enlightening, said Reflektive Vice President of Employee Success Rachel ernsthaftigkeit i n a press release. People, managers included, are human and therefore fallible. Although time-consuming, 360 reviews are an important tool to mitigate bias that can arise when just one person is conducting a top-down review. Peer input ensures feedback is more likely to be fair and well-rounded.Ernst suggested four tips on how to implement a successful peer-review system1. Identify anomalies.Find a rating that sticks out from the overall trend within your company. It may reflect personal bias.2. Strive for a balanced analysis.When using a peer-review system, questions should be tailored to identify different behaviors both positive and negative.3. Conduct a fact-based assessment.Reviewers need to provide specific examples for context. Accuracy is important.4. Align feedback to the vision.Ensure questions evaluate competencies in the job description. Kyle Schnitzer--This story originally appeared onLadders.
